CSU's free Math Placement Review tool provides a lot of questions.
Some students that I have worked with found it to be a bit overwhelming, and asked me if I would be able to create a more focused study guide for them to work from. Using my 25-years of helping students use CSU's Math Placement Review tool and my experience helping students pass the actual courses (Math 117, Math 118, Math 124, Math 125, and Math 126), I developed a study guide for my students. I also created video solutions to go along with all the sample problems in the study guide.
My study guide material is broken up into the three different sections of the Math Placement Exam (MPE).
The study guide includes:
- Algebra Section
Access to 4 PDF's with 24 Sample Questions each, and a video solution to go along with all 96 questions. - Trigonometry Section
Access to 4 PDF's with 16 Sample Questions each, and a video solution to go along with all 64 questions. - Logarithm Section
Access to 4 PDF's with 10 Sample Questions each, and a video solution to go along with all 40 questions.
My video solutions walk you through the solutions to each question step-by-step (I don't skip steps). MANY of my video solutions make use of only a TI-84 calculator to solve them. If you do not have access to a TI-84 calculator, or do not want to learn how to use your TI-84 calculator, then many of my video solutions may not be useful to you.
I will say that the calculator can make many problems much simpler to solve. I will also say that you probably don't need to buy a TI-84 calculator. You most likely know someone who has a TI-84 that they are not using, and they would be happy to loan you theirs to prepare for and take the exam.

The Math Placement Exam (MPE) is a total of 50 Questions.
Those 50 questions are divided into three different sections.
- Algebra (24 Questions)
Doing well on the this section can allow you to pass out of Math 117 and Math 118. - Trigonometry (16 Questions)
Doing well on this section can allow you to pass out of Math 125 and Math 126. - Logarithms (10 Questions)
Doing well on this section can allow you to pass out of Math 124
You do not need to do well on all three sections to pass out of a math course. Depending on your math background it might be better to focus on only sections you know you are familiar with. If you have never taken trigonometry, then you probably do want to spend too much time, if any, preparing for trigonometry section.
